Rollers, Galaxy Do Battle In Jwaneng

As the Botswana Premier League steadily draws to a conclusion, Township Rollers face Jwaneng Galaxy in what should be a tightly contested match between the sides positioned second and third on the log.

Rollers travelled from Gaborone to Jwaneng Friday afternoon ahead of a potentially mouthwatering clash scheduled for a 3 pm Saturday kickoff at the Galaxy Stadium.

Second on the log Popa will look to establish a foothold against a side that has been a major competitor in recent years.

Rollers and Galaxy have finished first and second for the past four football seasons; Galaxy coming second to champions Popa three times in a row from 2017 to 2019; before the Jwaneng side were crowned champions of the incomplete 2019-20 season as the COVID pandemic set in with Rollers just a point behind.

Since the league resumed late 2021 after an 18 month hiatus, the two sides have seen Gaborone United become this season’s pacesetters.

Early on this season, Galaxy joined Rollers in becoming the first two Botswana clubs to reach the CAF Champions League group stage, and the Jwaneng side initially struggled with domestic competition.

But of late, Galaxy have picked up form, winning their past five games against BDF XI, Prisons XI, Sua Flamingos, Police XI and Mogoditshane Fighters.

Those victories have catapulted Galaxy to third position, sitting on 55 points, just five adrift of second placed Rollers but with a game in hand.

The Galaxy fixture is the first of three games left for Rollers before the end of the league campaign and the Blues will look to go all out for victory.

Rollers enter the weekend second on the log, sitting on 60 points, four adrift of top of the log Gaborone United.
