Cooper, Boy On Target As Popa Go Top

A stunning Mothusi “Mini” Cooper direct free kick curled directly into the net from outside the 18 yard box and a Segolame Boy strike that rounded off a brilliant team move handed Township Rollers a 2-0 win over Prisons XI as Popa surged to the top of the BTC Premiership at the Molepolole Sports Complex on Wednesday night.

After an uninspiring first half ended goalless, Rollers gave a commanding second half performance, Cooper and Boy getting the goals that ensure the Blues now have 16 points after five wins and a draw; Popa ascending to the summit of the log.

Keeagile Kgosipula, who was injured while on national team duty during the Zebras’ Independence Day match against Namibia, joined long term absentees, Edwin Moalosi, Ofentse Nato, Lemponye Tshireletso and Gape Mohutsiwa in being unavailable for selection.

Rollers head coach Nikola Kavazovic made two changes to the team that defeated Police XI 3-0 at UB last Thursday night. Segolame Boy and Jackson Lesole moved to the bench while Motsholetsi Sikele and Kamogelo Matsabu made a start.

Utilising a 4-3-3 formation, Rollers started with a line up of Wagarre Dikago, Motsholetsi Sikele, Simisani Mathumo, Mosha Gaolaolwe, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Kago Monyake, Maano Ditshupo, Motshusi Cooper, Joel Mogorosi, Kamogelo Matsabu and Tumisang Orebonye.

Rollers’ first chance of the match fell to Joel Mogorosi, whose close range effort was tipped wide by Prisons goalkeeper Ontiretse Gaothobogwe in the tenth minute after Sikele had played in a telling cross into the box following neat interchange play with Matsabu on the right wing.

From the resultant corner kick, Mogorosi saw a close range header go wide.

Tumo Lebanna then unleashed a long range shot that hit the upright as Prisons nearly took the lead on the counter.

Orebonye hit a cross from the left wing into the Prisons danger zone but Mogorosi could not connect with his attempted header.

Lebanna tested Dikago with another long rage effort- the Popa goal minder equal to the task- and on the other end Matsabu saw his shot from outside the box go just wide as the match went into the half time break goalless.

Into the second half Rollers looked more enterprising, and won a free kick on the edge of the box.

Cooper stepped up to score his first goal of his Rollers career.

Segolame Boy was brought on for Monyake and added dimension the Popa midfield by spraying passes in the middle of the park, with Matsabu also looking more lively in a more wide role.

Matsabu played in Orebonye whose attempted toe poke tap in was stopped by Gaothobogwe who minutes later had to alert to save a Matsabu shot after the South African had worked his way into the box.

Boy balooned a shot over the bar from deep into the right edge of the Prisons penalty area, while Orebonye headed a just over the bar after Ditlhokwe had delivered a quality cross from the left wing.

Sikele hit a shot the went wide after a tearing run down the right flank.

After neat passing move by Rollers, Boy tested Gaothobogwe with a pile drive from outside the box that the Prisons goal minder had to fist into the air before handling.

The Blues then got their second; Boy ounding off a good team effort. After crisp passes were exchanged involving substitute Boyo Lechaena, Matsabu and Mogorosi, Boy stormed into the box and hit a shot that went in on the lower far right post.

Popa had played some good football in the second half, and Blues settled for a 2-0 win ahead of their next encounter against Extension Gunners.
